Backoffice

The Merlin Backoffice is the "brain" of the entire Merlin Application Suite. Every Merlin product comes with this backoffice. The backoffice allows the account administrator to maintain all aspects of the Merlin system.

Highlights include:

My Applications The backoffice includes quick links to all application public pages. These will include only the modules you have activated: the discussion forum, the calendar, the store, the photo gallery, web server options, email accounts.
Application Maintenance There are links to maintenance sections for each activated Merlin module. The maintenance tools are dependent on the particular module. See module descriptions.
Client Account Structure Merlin supports a hierarchical account structure. A client account is each busines, organization, or individual that will be using their own Merlin Application Suite. Thus each client account can have their own multiple email accounts, web site, store, photo gallery, etc.

There are different types of client accounts:

  • System Admin account - This account has full privileges in controlling and setting up all other account types. They can add and control new client and sub-client accounts. In addition, they can control the hardware configurations for the system. Normally, this account owns the hardware in which Merlin is residing.

  • Client acccount - These accounts can have their own Merlin Application Suite in addition to being able to add and control sub-client accounts under them.

  • Sub-client account - These end-user accounts can have their own Merlin Application Suite and their own domain. But they have no privileges regarding setting up new accounts.

Different Merlin products support different client accounts:

  • Business Server - supports one System Admin account and no other clients or sub-clients.
  • Hosting Server - supports one System Admin account and multiple client and sub-client accounts.
  • VPN/Routers - supports one System Admin account and no other clients or sub-clients.
  • Shared Hosting - each end-user account activated is a sub-client account. Client accounts can be sold to individuals or businesses who want to manage their own (sub-client) stable of accounts.
Account Administration Depending on what type of account has logged into the backoffice, the administrator can:
  • Add new clients (System Admin only) or sub-clients (System Admin or Client account only).
  • Remove or suspend clients or sub-clients.
  • View account information.
  • Assign domains to the account. Domains can be any of the following:
    1. For sub-clients, the domain can be the account alias with the client account domain. For example, the client account has domain xyz.com. Sub-clients can be smith.xyz.com, etc. Note! The client account domain must be hosted by cykic.com or an affiliate.
    2. Cykic offers optional "public" domains such as dbop.com. The user can select any alias and use this as a domain name. For example, smith.dbop.com. This is an excellent way to temporarily assign a domain name for immediate use.
    3. Register your own domain name. Optionally host the domain on Cykic Softwares domain name servers.
  • Activate application modules for listed accounts. Note - you can only activate modules that you yourself have purchased.
  • View web site activity reports for any account.
  • Send emails to accounts.
Disk Management All account holders can perform disk management tasks on their account data:
  • Run a disk verification utility to report any problems with data integrity.
  • Backup their account data to their local workstation. Data is compressed for optimal download time.
  • Restore account data should there be failures of any kind.
Network Administration System Admin accounts have access to network utilities:
  • Configure primary Internet network interface.
  • Assign optional IP aliases.
  • Configure secondary (local) lan network interface.
  • View all account holders with domains linked to IPs.
  • Configure firewall settings (block IPs, route IPs, etc).
  • Enable/disable services such as DHCP and SSH.
Miscellaneous Several options and preferences can be set. Dependent on account type (system admin, client, sub-client).
  • Set system date and time. Option to activate automatic daily time updates with a time server.
  • Activate auto-updating of software upgrades/bugs.
  • Allow/disallow customer service to have access to your Merlin server.
  • Determine how long to keep data for web site activity reports.
  • Assign passwords to give other users special backoffice access. Passwords are linked to application modules, thus allowing users to maintain only certain modules.
  • Update mime types supported by the web server.
  • View HTTP error reports for all accounts.
